Rules
- Call it a philosophy if you like
- Before starting The Oxygen Kiosk, we worked for several other web design companies. We were amazed at the lack of ethics, aesthetics and understanding by which these companies were run. While there are many ways to create a website, we follow or own set of rules. Rules which we believe will give you the best results possible. Minimizing time and expense while maximizing usability and leaving a clear upgrade path for the future.
- Code is poetry
- All code should be beautiful. It should be clean, human-readable and structured. All too often people rely on their tools to do the thinking for them, turning their websites into a mess of ugly, machine-generated code that doesn’t make sense to a human. We do our coding the old-fashioned way – by hand.
- Search Engine Optimisation isn’t an optional extra
- We build your site properly the first time, so we don’t need to charge you thousands of dollars to “optimise” the source code. We do it right, from the start, so you can go ahead and fill your site with compelling content and let the search engines find out what you’re about.
- The web is a tool, not a goal in itself
- The internet is an awesome place. We spend a lot of time here. Having a virtual presence is not an end in itself however. If you’ve been thinking you need a brochure site with a list of products and your contact details, then we think you should have a chat to us about all of the other things the internet can do for you and your customers.

For blogs which aren’t associated with a particular product or revenue-generating business, advertising is the main way to pay the bills. It’s not something which generally enhances a site, but we try our hardest to ensure that it’s not [...]
Spammers, Evildoers, and Opportunists, or: Why Oxygen Kiosk doesn’t offer SEO Services
I had a chat with a new client the other day about why we don’t consider “Search Engine Optimization” an optional extra, or even a service that we offer.
This morning there was a great string of posts on Merlin Mann’s twitter:
If you’re “insulted” by criticism of SEO, go write a novel or work at a [...]
Open Migration: Rescuing Content and Images from Squarespace
We’re currently helping our clients at Dubspot migrate their blog from Squarespace to a new system which will be built around a multi-user setup of Wordpress.
Squarespace’s propaganda goes on about “Total Data Portability”, and how “your data is yours to keep”. However, when it comes to moving to another system, there’s no automated method to [...]
